Marc Andreessen coined the clever and funny phrase “software is eating the world” back in 2011.
So perhaps it should come as no surprise that one of VC firm Andreessen Horowitz’s partners – Benedict Evans – has given his must-read slide presentation the title…
Amazingly, after reading through the presentation, the title comes off as something of an understatement.
It’s more like mobile is swallowing the world whole.
Just a couple of facts from Evan’s well-researched report tell the tale…
- An iPhone 6 has 625 times more transistors than a 1995 Pentium desktop.
- During the iPhone 6 launch weekend, Apple sold about 25 times more CPU transistors than were in all the PCs on Earth in 1995.
- There will be two to three times more smartphones than PCs by 2020.
As mobile technology grows increasingly sophisticated, it will generate “vastly bigger opportunities [than] any time in history.”
That’s one heck of an epic claim. To Evans’ credit, by the end of the presentation, it seems entirely reasonable.
The 53 slides offer plenty of facts to back up his vision of a mobile-dominated future. One in particular I have to show you. It’s equal parts amusing and scary – his “Email is for grandparents” chart…
Yes, it’s the tweeners and young teens in the 11 to 15 set who have forsaken email. They’re kids now, but in five short years they’re in high school and university. And five years after that, in the workforce. The world is moving fast.
Evans says, “Mobile changes everything.” At the end of the presentation, you’d be hard-pressed not to agree.
